Overview

This red catuai comes from the talented producer Andrés Reyes Hernandez. His four hectare farm, Reyes, sits in the mountains of Intibucá, in the south-west part of Honduras. Andrés is a member of the Intibucá collective - a 60 farmer collective in the Pozo Negro community dedicated to supporting each other to increase their coffee quality and yield. The results are clear from this sweet and easy drinking microlot, which reminds us of baked plums, nectarines and caramel.

Andrés's story

Coffee has been in Andrés’ family for generations.  Andrés´s maternal grandfather was one of the first coffee producers in Pozo Negro and Andrés' wife, Teresa, also works with Andrés on the farm.

Andrés is a member of the Intibucá collective, which is dedicated to improving specialty coffee cultivation in Pozo Negro. They elect a chairman every year, and hold regular meetings to organise their production and share knowledge about improving coffee quality and yield. They are also making significant efforts to reinvest in their infrastructure, including their wet mills and drying facilities. This has also allowed each producer to improve the traceability of their coffees and separate out the high quality microlots.

Production process

Andrés cultivates Red Catuai at an elevation of 1670 - 1700 M.A.S.L on his farm, where produces approximately 45 bags of coffee a year. It is processed as a washed coffee.

Our relationship

This is the first coffee we purchased from the coffee importer Nordic Approach, which landed in July 2024.  Nordic Approach is working with Andrés and the Intibucá collective to help them better understand and further develop the quality of their coffees and find a stable market for them. Through these efforts they seek to support Andrés to increase the income earned from his coffee over time.
