We are Culainn and Lea, the team behind Conscious. We began our work alongside coffee producers in South America in 2021, where we developed an understanding of specialty coffee cultivation, processing and importing. Drawing on our professional backgrounds in design, research and international law, we began building partnerships with smallholder coffee producers and community projects in Peru, with whom we continue to work today. In the following years, we have steadily expanded our coffee sourcing to other origins, as we strive to build a model with our partners that contributes to a more equitable supply chain.
Starting at the very beginning of the specialty coffee supply chain and being involved in all stages of the process is integral to the way we work. We bring this experience and insight to every step of sourcing, importing, and roasting our coffees.
As a certified Arabica Q Grader, Culainn applies his expertise in the sensory evaluation of coffee, which we harness as a team to select high-quality coffees with distinctive and vibrant flavour profiles and to provide constructive feedback to our producer partners. This approach ensures both excellent coffee quality and transparency from farm to cup.
Our goal is simple: to source and roast coffees that are vibrant, approachable, and consistently delicious, while fostering a more equitable supply chain. This requires continuously adapting our approach to suit the unique circumstances of each region and the partnerships we build within them.
Across Peru, Bolivia and Colombia, we focus on building partnerships with smallholder and family-run coffee producers and community projects. These producers share a commitment to sustainable agricultural practices and exceptional coffee cultivation and processing. Paying financially sustainable prices for their coffee (and being transparent about what we pay) is only part of the story; we consider every producer’s specific needs and strive to create tailored support accordingly - including investing in their production processes, purchasing greater quantities of their coffee year-on-year, maintaining regular visits, and providing educational support so that we can together improve on quality and productivity.
In regions beyond South America, such as East Africa, we work with trusted importers who source delicious coffees while maximizing positive impacts for producers.
We roast to highlight the unique character of each coffee, capturing the distinct flavors and aromas that reflect its origin and meticulous production. Through continuous testing and refinement, we design a tailored roast profile for every coffee, ensuring that every coffee shines. Roasted on our Giesen W15A drum roaster—renowned for precision and consistency—our coffees are sweet, smooth, and beautifully balanced.
